I think you should make this. I think you should make this for yourself. Just for you. Say hello to summer just a little bit early with this drink.
It’s that time of year where I long for summer break. Cut-off jean shorts, cowboy boots, and tank tops. A good patch of grass and a rainy summer day book. Campfires and maybe even mosquito bites. Maybe not. This drink is your gateway to summer drink. It’s still a little springy, still got a hint of winter, but mix it with some ginger beer and you’ll be good to go. If you’re already over the heat, crank up the AC and make it a hot toddy.
This is easy to make. You’re just going to need some cardamom pods, green or white will do, vanilla beans, an orange and a lemon, and some good bourbon. I like Bulleit’s Frontier Whiskey. Why wouldn’t I? You should probably start with some half decent bourbon because bad bourbon can’t be transformed with lemon zest like so many things can.
Zest an orange and a lemon with a microplane. Do it right over the jar so you can catch those oils that keep the citrus flavor. Split a vanilla pod and scrape some beans in. Crush your cardamom pods and put those in, too. Shake it.
And you’re done. That’s it.
Enjoy in two weeks. Mix with ginger beer or make a whiskey sour with it. Drink it by itself. Give it to somebody who needs it.
Cardamom-Vanilla Bourbon with Citrus
5 cardamom pods
1 vanilla bean
Pint size mason jars
Zest orange and lemon over the mason jar. Crush cardamom pods gently with a fork. Split open a vanilla bean and scrape out beans into the jar. I find it easy to do this with the dull edge of a butter knife. Fill the jar up with bourbon and give it a good shake. Store in a dark space for 2 weeks, shaking on occasion. Drink!
